  Liz Claiborne
Liz Claiborne, her husband and two partners established Liz Claiborne Inc. in 1976. It was during a time when a flow of women were entering the workforce. They saw the opportunity to create fashionable clothing for these women, thus revolutionizing the fashion industry. Also during this time, department stores separated their clothing by classification - pants in one department, and shirts in another. This was a downfall for Liz Claiborne's sportswear, but they had worked with the retailers to test the concept of combining related sportswear pieces in one department so that shoppers would not have to go from department to department to find their outfits. With high volume of sales, they also began to operate overseas for faster shipping and lower prices. Liz Claiborne was the first company founded by a woman to be listed in the Fortune 500.
