  Christian Dior
Christian Dior was an influential French fashion designer born to Maurice Dior, a manufacturer of fertilizer and chemicals. As a child, he had a passion for the arts and was supported by his father. Money was given to open a small art gallery to sell art such as Pablo Picasso and Max Jacob, however, after financial hardship, he shut down the gallery. He then made a living doing sketches for haute couture houses, working with Robert Piguet. Dior joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, went into business with Marcel Boussac and opened his fashion house in 1946. He received fame from his first collection known as the New Look. It involved more fabric to be used, which was scarce due to the wartime shortages. His dresses provided a curvaceous shape for women, which were sometimes covered down to the calves and ankles. In time, his New Look revolutionized women's dresses.
